Central Church members were the force and energy that founded Swords Into Plowshares and kept it going for many of our 25 years. Central Church has many times aptly been called the "conscience of the City" and today remains a home for peace and justice issues. We are pleased to announce and support their wonderful event.

As the kick-off celebration to its 200th anniversary celebration next year, Central United Methodist Church invites you to its 5th Annual Peace & Justice Banquet on Sunday, December 6, 2009 at Fellowship Chapel in Detroit.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. and includes a silent auction, dinner and program featuring keynote speaker Reverend Dr. Joseph E. Lowery, the 2009 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Other honorees include David E. Bonior, Chair, American Rights at Work Board of Directors and former United States Representative, the Honorable Marilyn J. Kelly, Chief Justice, Michigan Supreme Court and the Honorable Judge Damon J. Keith, U.S. Court of Appeals for the SIxth Circuit.

Tables of 10 are available for $1,250.00. Individual tickets are $125 each. Tables and tickets can be purchased at www.centralumchurch.org or by calling 313.965.5422, ext. 130. Proceeds from the banquet support N.O.A.H. (Networking, Organizing and Advocacy with the Homeless), which is the Church's program that feeds over 30,000 poor and homeless people annually.

Holiday Lights Tour
Preservation Wayne, Detroit’s oldest and largest local historic preservation organization introduces their newest tour just in time for the holidays.

Saturday, December 19, 2009
6 PM - 9 PM

Enjoy a festive motor coach tour through select historic neighborhoods including: Arden Park, Boston Edison, and Indian Village.  Warm beverages and assorted goodies will be served.

Tickets are $30 per person.

Participants will meet in front of the Preservation Wayne Offices at 4735 Cass Avenue, Detroit, MI 48201.  Reservations are required.

Holiday Music Festival
Sunday, December 6

The annual Holiday Music Festival featuring the Friends of Focus: HOPE will mark a new milestone this year -- it is the 40th anniversary of this popular concert.

Folksingers who have supported Focus: HOPE throughout its existence will perform. Among the performers will be Barbara Bredius, Ron Coden, Kitty Donohoe, Robert Jones, Charlie Latimer, Chuck Mitchell, Mustards Retreat, David Reske, Dean Rutledge, Matt Watroba, and Josh White, Jr.

The festival will begin at 3 p.m. at North Rosedale Park Community Center, 18445 Scarsdale, Detroit.

This annual event is the only way to start holidays. Ticket prices remain at $25. Beverages and hors d'oeuvres are available for purchase. Seating is limited so reserve your ticket now by calling Lynn at 313.494.4334.

Special Holiday Food Delivery
Saturday, December 12

Join us on December 12 when volunteers will fan out to make a special holiday food delivery to senior citizens who participate in our food program. Volunteers will gather at 8 a.m. at our Central Warehouse, 6500 East Davison, Detroit, to finish packing boxes of food and set out to deliver them.

The holiday food boxes are in addition to the box of nutritionally-balanced food that low income seniors get each month. The special delivery is made possible by numerous food drives conducted by churches, schools and businesses each year.
Seniors will be selected at random from the nearly 1,000 homebound seniors on our program. Arrangements will be made in advance to assure that the seniors are aware of the delivery.
